How to Tell Your Home Has Electrical Problems

If you suspect that there are problems with your home electrical system, there are certain unmistakable signs that you should be aware of.

Being aware of these signs will make it easier for you to take the action you need to get your electrical system functioning properly. Here are some of the most important tools you should look out for to determine if something is not quite right.

Dimming and Flickering Lights

Dimming and flickering lights are one of the first signs that something is wrong with your electrical system. Light fixtures are not going to draw a lot of power.

So if you are seeing flickering it's very unlikely that there is something wrong with the fixture. The culprit may be an appliance that uses a lot of voltage

It may simply be that these appliances need dedicated electrical lines for themselves or there is wiring in your home that needs attention.

Burn Smells

Nothing signals that there is something wrong with your electrical system more than the smell of something burning.

Whether you notice this smell in the sockets or from light fixtures, it is indicative that something has gone wrong with your electrical system and you need to take steps to fix it as soon as possible.

An electrician will be able to tell you exactly what the problem is. This is something that you should not try to diagnose yourself, get professional help as quickly as you can. This is a fire hazard.

Frayed Wiring

If you are noticing frayed wiring anywhere in your home then you should get a professional to come in and fix this as soon as you can. Frayed wiring can lead to electrical shock.

Frayed wiring is often caused by rodents or even pets. Whatever the cause of the freight wiring it needs to be rectified by a licensed electrician as soon as possible.

Circuit Breaker Tripping

Once you notice that your circuit breaker starts tripping continuously it is also another indicator that something is wrong with your electrical system. Normal circuit breakers will trip once in a while.

This does not indicate a serious problem.  However, a circuit breaker that is continuously tripping in your home may be a sign you need whole house rewiring

Often when a circuit breaker starts tripping it's because an appliance has been plugged in. If you notice that plugging in your washing machine or your dishwasher results in your circuit breaker tripping, you need to get professional help as soon as possible.

Get Help

Electrical problems are not something that you should sit on. Once you notice that this is happening you should take every precaution to protect your home.

Get a professional to come in and look at your concern as soon as you can. This is the best way to make sure that these problems will not get out of hand.
