It’s interesting how still, 13 months after Willow’s birth, her room is a sacred and tranquil place. I’m not the only one who feels it; friends who stop by tend to linger in there. She absolutely loves it, too, climbing on her little chair and riding her rocking unicorn with glee. She often runs from the kitchen or living room where we’re hanging out together and straight into a corner of her bedroom, laughing.
When you design a nursery, you’re thinking of the baby days. But I got to do it twice. In Bethesda, my sweet thing’s room was small, dark, and gorgeous. A precious and tiny spot perpetually warm and perfectly set up for her newborn needs. But since we moved when she was five months old, I had a chance to redesign with more space just when she started exploring.
The new nursery is functional for baby life but open to the many stages of toddlerdom that lie ahead. The color palette mirrors her original room in the dominance of pinks and grays with touches of gold. This time, though, we’ve had additional wall space for hanging art, so we’ve included a diversity of pieces, bringing in the purples and greens of nature. This room is reflective of my original goal of “Woodland Fairytale” — we’ve just added further touches of whimsy and imprints of animal life you see below.
Above Willow’s bed is the gorgeous butterfly cornice that sat on my baby registry until July 4th of this year when I drove to a local New Jersey mall and bought it myself. I added our own tulle for a sweeping look. The print that hangs beneath it was the first piece of art Josh gave me; it pictures a little boy hanging stars in the sky for the girl. I’ll always treasure this piece.
To the left of her bed is a white table with a drawer for trinkets. On it sits her WILLOW blocks by Sweet Sage Studio, a Tiffany bunny bank, and a lamp that projects dancing bunnies onto the ceiling at bedtime.
The drawing you see here was done of Josh and me in Laguna Beach just after getting engaged. The “OOTD” hook is a fun way for me to lay out Willow’s outfit for the next day. I painted it and will soon be doing more of these to sell, too. (This sweet dress is by Bonpoint; the lace turban is from Sparkle + Prim).
I’m absolutely mad for our tent from Mimi’s Tents. It expands to fit more kiddos (or stuff!) inside and folds flat for easy storage. We hung a DIY flower crown on the top for a pop of color here. The faux fur blanket is from Target, and the gold dots on the wall were custom-made for us by The Pink Polka Dot CC.
The time and love that went into this needlepoint piece from Bloom-Prints Studio I can only imagine. The gorgeous sponge painting to the right was done by my late uncle, Jeffrey Studenroth, who was a very talented artist and a huge inspiration to me in my creative pursuits.
Willow’s room is a toddler’s space, and thus it’s designed for messy fun. The surfaces are soft and easy to climb, like this awesome Pottery Barn chair from my mom. (Here, she’s wearing a Sparkle + Prim headband and leggings by Mila Chic.)
Speaking of Pottery Barn, this unicorn rocker she received for her first birthday is one of her favorite things in the room. We move it around to give her plenty of space while riding! Willow’s dresser was a Giggle find — I adore its modern shape and clean lines. (Bow by Mila Chic, onesie by Welcome to Wonderland, tutu by Sparkle + Prim).
This photograph was another relic from our engagement; we purchased it that weekend at a gallery in San Diego. Her IKEA bookcase has been following us around for years and in the course of several moves, its top got a bit banged up. To conceal any dents and soften the edges, I laid some tulle across it and covered that with an Aden + Anais swaddler that matches her cribskirt. Here we keep a collection of books and some treasured items like a Tiffany cup, a vintage bowl for pacifiers, and birthday crown by Love Crush Bowtique.
Here’s my little miss sitting pretty in the rocking chair I had to have — its stripes actually landed it in the clearance section when I was eight months pregnant and I couldn’t have been more excited to select a unique look for our nursery. The Land of Nod pillow she’s cuddling up to here says “Dream.” Behind Willow is a handknit blanket from a lifelong friend of mine. The necklace is Simply Elle and the top is, yes, Mila Chic. Other notes: unless otherwise stated, most furniture and larger decor items in the room are from Pottery Barn. It’s kind of hard to get a photo of her whole room at once since it’s a big square with a peninsula off the end featuring double walk-in closets. Below was the best I could do — hope you enjoy! xo
